?Local chocolate decorating instructor Kat Montgomery, aka the Chocolate Addict, sent us a review copy of the first of an instructional DVD series. It was only a few minutes into Volume One: The Chocolate Garden when we were sold on her bubbly personality as well as her knack for describing fundamentals like tempering. If you don't heat and cool chocolate at the correct temperature, she explains, your chocolate will "freak out." That's a language we can understand.
We also love her unconventional tips, like using a pet-warming disc to keep chocolate at the right temperature, or the multiple costume changes the hostess makes (this is probably the first chocolate DVD that employs white go-go boots). Most important, Montgomery breaks down her lessons in an accessible way that makes us think, at least temporarily, that we can drizzle out chocolate butterflies as beautifully as she does. And if you need in-person instruction, Montgomery's also got decorating classes scheduled throughout the Bay Area over the coming months.
